? Some Midwood homeowners want plans for a new yeshiva scrapped.
Residents argue that demolishing two homes on Elmwood Avenue to build the school would destroy the neighborhood?s character, increase traffic, noise and debris. The Mostly Orthodox Jewish community also complains that the school should be built within the zoning laws.
Rabbis argue the school is needed for the overflow at nearby Cheder Yeshiva. They claim that school enhanced the neighborhood. The yeshiva is applying to the city for a building variance that would allow the new school to be constructed taller and wider. The yeshiva?s lawyer says federal law allows for exceptions for religious buildings. A community board will hear both sides of the case on June 20 before making a recommendation to a city board.
