Police say that a 12-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy face assault charges in the stabbing of a man near Maria Hernandez Park.

Residents like Ellen say they are stunned by the news.

"That was pretty shocking to me that they were so young," she said. "And that kids that young were walking around with a knife."

The stabbing happened just after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Starr Street and Irving Avenue, near Maria Hernandez Park in Bushwick. An unidentified 41-year-old man was stabbed in the armpit and abdomen. Officials say EMS took him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, where he remains in stable condition.

According to some neighbors, the 41-year-old man is a dog trainer and well-known amongst parkgoers.

The NYPD says both boys are charged with three counts of assault. The 15-year-old faces additional charges, including menacing and criminal possession of a weapon.

Residents like Joseph Siovestre said the shocking incident has left him on high alert when walking around the neighborhood.

"I mean, it makes everyone feel uneasy, of course," Siovestre said. "You shouldn't have to look over your shoulder constantly."

NYPD tells News 12 that they are still working to unravel what led to the incident.
