Now that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has cleared children ages 5 to 11 for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, families in the Bronx are starting to roll up their little ones' sleeves.
A mobile vaccine site at St. Mary’s Park in the Bronx offered the shot for kids on Friday.
Although experts say kids are unlikely to get as sick from COVID-19 as adults do, they are still affected.
City data reported that children ages 5 to 11 are now becoming disproportionately infected more than any other age group in New York City.
Nationwide, more than 8,000 kids have been hospitalized with COVID-19, according to the CDC.
Following the CDC’s approval, the mayor announced that city kids between the ages 5 to 11 could start getting shots on Thursday.
Children in this age group who get vaccinated will be receiving a lower dose of the Pfizer shot, which is the only vaccination approved for kids so far.
City doctors say they understand the fear some parents might have. Next Monday, the city will start hosting one-day vaccine clinics during school hours at schools that enroll children ages 5 to 11.
A parent or guardian must either be present or give verbal or written consent for a child to receive a shot.
