Moderna announced Thursday that people will need a COVID-19 booster shot to protect against mutations of the coronavirus.

A recent company analysis showed that its vaccine is 93% effective up to six months after the second dose.

Since Mayor Bill de Blasio announced New York City health and hospital workers would need to be vaccinated or face regular testing -- there's been a 189% increase in vaccinations among the group since then.

Those who aren't on board with getting the shot can expect to take a hit to social activity as they will no longer be allowed to participate in indoor dining, theaters and gyms beginning Sept. 13.

The race to vaccinate is also closing in on parents who are sending their children back to school. Monday is the last day for students to get the vaccine to be fully vaccinated against the virus by the time school opens Sept. 13.
