This week is National School Bus Safety Week, and across the country, over 400 students have been killed while getting picked up or dropped off by a school bus over the past 30 years -- which is about 13 deaths each year.

In any town, when the school bus red lights are on, you must stop. In Montclair, News 12 is told police have issued over 400 summonses within the past three years, but with school mostly virtual for a year -- the summonses were issued within two school years.

The Montclair Police Traffic Bureau started a School Bus Safety initiative in 2019 after learning drivers were not stopping for stopped school buses. When red lights are flashing, you must stop 25 feet from the school bus on either side if there is no barrier. If there is a barrier, go 10 mph when passing a bus on the other side.
