After many years of community leaders pushing for more affordable housing, the low-income units are headed to East New York.
The city says a 227-acre landfill site will be developed into affordable homes. More than 2,000 units are under construction at the Nehemiah Spring Creek Houses at Gateway Estates. The estates will also include a large shopping center, a school and housing for seniors.
Construction will be done in phases and the city says the first families will move in next summer. City officials add that there will be a 50 percent preference for local residents to get new units. Meanwhile, local leaders are negotiating to get Brooklyn businesses into the shopping center. The planned shopping center is also expected to bring 1,000 jobs to the area.
