Brooklyn residents are upset over plans to close the two remaining health clinics in the area.

The plans to close the clinics may seem all too familiar to residents, some of whom were forced to find alternate means of health care last year when St. Mary?s Hospital closed its doors.

The hospital, which transferred most of its outpatient family health centers to Kingsbrook HealthCare Systems, lost about 50 percent of its patients due to the transfer. Community organizations around the area fear this loss of patient return will happen again in response to the new plans.

Community organizations, residents and elected officials are fighting to keep the remaining two clinics open. Citizens have been writing letters to Governor Eliot Spitzer and the New York State Department of Health. They are asking for 90 days to try to find an alternative to the closings.

The health department says it conducted a survey of the clinics and their surrounding areas. It claims that the clinics that are pending closure are not necessary to the area.
