Thousands of teachers, administrators and aides across the city received pink slips today.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the more than 3,500 personnel from 24 schools citywide will be placed into what's called an "excess pool." When the schools reopen in the fall with different names, the faculty in this pool can apply for their positions again.
The United Federation of Teachers say the faculty who remain in the excess pool will still be receiving their salaries, but they will face the uneasiness of not having a steady schedule.
The teachers in the pool also face being pulled into different schools each week as substitute teachers.
