Morris Park homeowners are voicing opposition to a proposal that would place critically ill ex-inmates from Rikers Island in a medical site near their neighborhood.
The city’s proposal to bring the sick former inmates to NYC Health + Hospitals/ Jacobi would provide 72 beds and a section for affordable housing for the homeless.
Homeowners believe the project is not right for their community.
“This neighborhood is a beautiful neighborhood, and we need this like we need a hole in the head,” said one homeowner near Seminole Avenue.
Assembly Member Nathalia Fernandez met with Fortune Society today to clear up misinformation about the plan, and a community input meeting has been scheduled to take place next week with City Council Member Marjorie Velázquez.
Officials say construction is at least three years away and that the project will need approval from the City Council.
