A woman is dead after being shot along Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights.  

A neighbor tells News 12 there was a whole crowd of people in the area were the shooting happened. They had come from a funeral a few blocks away and were celebrating the life of a gentleman who passed away from cancer when gunfire erupted.

Police tell us they responded to a 911 call of a woman shot near 697 Franklin Ave. Wednesday night and found her on the ground with gunshot wounds to her head and leg. She was rushed to the hospital but did not survive her injuries. Investigators have not identified her, but say they believed she was in her 40s.

The neighbor says the victim was a mother and used to live in the area but moved to New Jersey a few years ago, and she was always involved in the community helping others.

Police are still trying to find out what lead up to the incident. According to officers, at least two men were seen running away when shots rang out.
