The mother of a 6-year-old Brooklyn boy stabbed to death in a NYCHA elevator last year is now suing New York City.
According to a legal document first filed last summer, Aricka McClinton is asking for $281 million. She claims that the public housing authority did not do enough to make sure the apartment building was safe prior to the killing of her son, Prince Joshua Avitto, also known as P.J.
McClinton says the Boulevard Houses on Schenck Avenue had an array of security risks that allowed her son's accused killer, 28-year-old Daniel St. Hubert, to gain access to the building undetected while armed with a steak knife. Those risks include a broken front door, no surveillance cameras and no tenant patrol.
Just days after the stabbings last June, NYCHA began installing cameras in the building and the broken door has since been fixed.
Police say St. Hubert followed Prince, and 7-year-old Mikayla Capers, into the elevator where he stabbed them both several times with a steak knife.
Capers survived the attack. St. Hubert has pleaded not guilty.
