The
intersection of 149th Street and Prospect Avenue received a new
name – ‘Commissioner Luis E. Rios Way”.
Luis
Rios was a pillar for the South Bronx community. He was born in Puerto Rico and
moved to the Bronx as a child. He developed a passion for boxing and his
community very early on in life.
Family,
friends, and admirers of the Bronx advocate gathered for a ceremony on the
renamed street to honor his contributions to the Bronx. He was an owner of
multiple businesses and was the commissioner of the New York State Athletic
Commission.
He
passed in 2008, but residents of the neighborhood say his legacy is alive and
well.
