The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is adding UV lights to its arsenal when it comes to fighting the coronavirus during the overnight shutdown of subways. 

The MTA says a doctor at Columbia University has proven that using ultraviolet rays on the COVID-19 virus has destroyed it. 

Starting next week, those rays will be blasted out onto subways and buses.

The MTA has partnered with startup company Puro, which makes the portable devices. They are looking to use the technology at stations and other locations. 

Phase one will begin next week on subways and buses to see what the most efficient placement and duration of the lamps will be. 

Phase two will occur after 3 1/2 weeks if it is successful to LIRR and Metro-North systems. 

The MTA spent about $1 million on 230 UV lamps.
