The MTA on Wednesday announced a massive plan to upgrade the subway system.

Officials say the multibillion "Fast Forward" plan will improve service and stations within the next five years.

The proposed plan would upgrade the signal system, which is the cause of recent delays.

The current signal system requires trains to be spaced far apart for dispatchers to know where they are, which means fewer trains can run. Under the proposed plan, dispatchers can space trains closer together so more can run at the same time.

There would also be new elevators and restrooms installed at stations.

Officials say that the changes will cause short-term pain with limited service and temporary station closures. They say that once work is complete, riders can expect consistent service and fewer delays.

The proposed project would receive funding from the city, state and federal government.

Officials say that repair work can start as early as this year.
