After shutting down the bathrooms at all of its subway stations during the COVID-19 pandemic, the MTA started reopening them at few at a time in January 2023.

Right now, the MTA tells News 12 there are 122 subway stations with open bathrooms around the city, with 21 of them in Brooklyn. That includes some of the busier stations, like Broadway Junction, Barclays Center and Coney Island.

Some riders told News 12 they were a little hesitant to use a bathroom in a subway station.

"I'm going to wait until I get home. The elevators look nasty, so I can imagine what the bathrooms look like," said Raven Steele, of Williamsburg.

But the MTA says they used the time the bathrooms were closed on renovations to add new lighting, paint, faucets, tiles and privacy panels.

All of the bathrooms are open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., but closed between noon and 1 p.m. for cleaning. So, in theory, they should always be in decent shape.

News 12 spoke with a few riders, like Shamar Crossfield from Queens who backed that up, saying he had used the bathroom at the Broadway Junction station and said, "it actually wasn't dirty or anything, it was actually pretty clean."

While Natalie Tapia from East New York had not used them herself, she said "from what I've seen, sometimes when the door's open, it looks clean, so it's OK. I would go ahead and use it."
