The MTA says it is fixing a loophole at the L train station in Canarsie that is allowing riders to evade paying fares.

Fare evasion is costly, according to the MTA. And it seems to be done frequently in Canarsie due to a construction loophole

To crack down on L train toll evaders - the MTA says it is relocating some of the turnstiles and adding a fence between the train platform and the bus stop.

The MTA says fare beating has cost the agency nearly $700 million in 2022 alone.

The project will not affect riders getting a free bus transfer for the B6, B42 and B82 buses. The MTA told News 12 that it will ensure customers still get that free transfer to the subway.

Workers on site say construction is expected to be complete by next Friday.

The MTA says fare evasions arrests are up five times more than they were just two years ago.
