The red-vested subway station agents who provide straphangers with directions and other information will soon be a thing of the past.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority voted in May to phase out the customer-service agents beginning Sept. 20. The agency introduced the agents only four years ago to provide information, open gates and assist straphangers.
The cuts are expected to save the MTA $16 million by 2010.
