The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) says it is working to provide safe and reliable transportation for New Yorkers during the latest round of extreme heat and humidity.
MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber held a briefing with New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Thursday, outlining the agency's plan to address the challenges of the heat wave.
Lieber emphasized that air conditioning is a top priority for subway cars.
"Ninety-nine percent of subway cars have a high-functioning A/C," he said. "And all of our cars are inspected when they go out of the yard and when they come back to make sure the A/C is functioning."
The MTA is also increasing inspections to monitor the heat's impact on the system's tracks.
