The East River tunnel for the R train may be reopening earlier than expected.
MTA officials working to restore the Montague Street tunnel said the tube could potentially be up and running weeks ahead of its scheduled reopening before October.
The R train has not been running between Brooklyn and Manhattan since August 2013 due to Superstorm Sandy repairs. The MTA said salty floodwater corroded its mechanical and electrical infrastructure, forcing the multimillion-dollar rehabilitation project.
Commuters told News 12 that they are excited about the potentially faster return of the city-bound train.
