MTA unveils brand-new subway cars
The MTA says these new cars will make their debut on the A and C subway lines in the final quarter of 2023.

2h agoThe Metropolitan Transportation Authority unveiled the brand-new R211 train as the agency looks to revamp its fleet of subway cars.
The new cars are slightly wider, and the MTA says they are much more reliable. Transit officials took the new cars for a test ride today.
The new cars will be replacing the R46 cars that have been running for over 50 years.
The R211 is the first subway car to use the open gangway model – meaning passengers can freely walk from one end of the train to the other.
The MTA has ordered about a dozen of these new cars from its maker, Kawasaki, but not all of them will be open gangway models. Officials say they’ll be testing the two different cars over the next few months to see if they are viable for the 110-year-old system.
The MTA says these new trains will start out running on the A and C subway lines, with a plan to roll them out in the last quarter of 2023.
