A museum in Williamsburg is keeping New York City’s history alive by showcasing local memorabilia.

Beth Haines is the assistant director at the City Reliquary museum and says it began when the founder just started to display some of his collection in front of his home window.

“We are a community museum and civic organization. We collect artifacts and ephemera of everyday New Yorkers telling their stories. Things that slip through the cracks,” Haines says.

The museum shines a light on mom and pop shops that have slowly vanished throughout the years. Visitors can find old photographs from a barber shop and a display cake from a once-popular bakery in Brooklyn.

“I think that both visitors and native New Yorkers find a lot to learn here about the ways the city is for the actual people that live here,” Haines shares.

The museum is open from Thursday through Sunday, 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.  Admission is $7 for adults.
