407ds agoMonday marks four years since NYPD Det. Miosotis Familia was killed in the line of duty. Family, friends and fellow officers spent the day honoring her life.
A 12-year veteran of the NYPD, Familia had just started her overnight shift on July 5, 2017 sitting in a Fordham mobile command center when someone walked up to the side window and shot her. The mother of three was killed instantly.
"We idolized her, and with true adoration," says Genesis Familia, Miosotis' daughter. "My mom was my hero, and we would call her supermom."
Genesis says her mom was a child of immigrants, a first-generation American who joined the NYPD to make a difference.
The NYPD says they're committed to keeping the detective's legacy alive. When new officers walk into the 46th Precinct and ask who the person is on their mural, they don't just talk about the officer -- they talk about the person.
"That's what that mural means. It means strength, it means courage, it means love," says PBA President Pat Lynch.
Genesis Familia also announced that she will be starting a charity in her mom's honor aimed at helping families -- especially those with parents who died in the line of duty.
Her first project will be a scholarship to put an NYPD youth explorer in the 46th Precinct.
