Some community members are angry and confused over a 1920s advertisement for a Ku Klux Klax meeting that was posted on the Suffolk County Historical Society's website.
Eastern Long Island NAACP President Lawrence Street says the photo is "very offensive."
It advertises a "Monster Klan" gathering in Riverhead and shows men in KKK robes on the flatbed of a pickup truck.
The Suffolk County Historical Society posted it as their photo of the week.
"I want to find out what was going through everyone's mind to decide to post something like this," Street says.
He tells News 12 that the Southampton Historical Museum posted similar photos.
News 12 went to the Suffolk County Historical Society for answers, but a woman said they have "no comment."
Both historical societies took down the post and the Suffolk County Historical Society apologized.
"They said they made a wrong move," Street says. "I appreciate the apology, but it shouldn't have happened in the first place."
Street says he plans to hold a press conference Friday afternoon to address the issue
