A Bronx woman who was supposed to care for a toddler is accused of shaking him so violently that his brain hemorrhaged.Bibi Safeena Zaman, 23, is charged with reckless assault of a child and is in the Westchester County Jail. Police say she called Greenburgh police Thursday to report that the 18-month-old victim, Rehan Karnani, had fallen. However, a medical examiner found the boy's injuries were inconsistent with her account.
Police say Zaman changed her story after she was presented with the evidence and reportedly confessed to shaking the boy, who remains hospitalized in intensive care.
Zaman has no prior criminal history, and authorities say she also looked after the boy's 3-month-old sister without incident.
The National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome says as many as 1,400 children are treated each year for shaking injuries, and about a quarter of them die.
