Nassau police are warning about violence at summer gatherings and events after two teens were assaulted by two other teens in Merrick over Memorial Day weekend.

Commissioner Patrick Ryder told News 12 they're looking to hold the people who shot the video of the assault accountable.

"We're going to go after them now because they're facilitating this act by these two young ladies," says Ryder.

This incident has sparked major concerns among the police and the community, with many saying they're worried about large gatherings while kids are out of school for the summer.

Nassau police are also stepping up patrols are at other summer events.

"You do have the, groups of students that have these meetups," says Long Beach resident Kathy Grant. "I'm hoping that we don't confront something like that here in Long Beach."

"I try to avoid very large crowds where it's like people are mushed together because I don't know who's going to stab or whatever," says Cedarhurst resident Seena Rubenstein.

Nassau police are already tracking a few events like these.

"We are going to be out there. We're going to put the resources," says Ryder. "We had it last year at Jones Beach. We had the that we moved them from Long Beach and they went to Jones Beach. It was a senior cut day and we went in there, we did not tolerate it."

Nassau police say it's not just local kids doing this. He says kids are coming from Queens for events like these.

"These are family events where you want to bring your kid to enjoy a good time at the little, small carnival, to enjoy it and then you got kids destroying it," says Ryder.
