One of America's top education advocates visited the Yonkers school district today.
National Education Association President Becky Pringle toured three city schools as part of her nationwide "Joy, Justice and Excellence Tour.”
She says the district's efforts to improve educational opportunities for children needs to be shared nationally. "We've got to spread this across our country and make sure others are learning with you, as you do what you must and you do what's right so that all of our students have what they need and what they deserve."
Mayor Mike Spano also announced that the city's new school currently being built will be named Justice Sonia Sotomayor Elementary School.
She is the Supreme Court's first Hispanic justice. Sotomayor was born and raised in the Bronx.
