All NYPD officers throughout Brooklyn and the rest of the city will soon have added protection while keeping the streets safe. The NYPD has started giving officers new and improved bulletproof vests. The new vests improve coverage of the neck and side of the torso, and also protect against higher caliber bullets. Each custom-fitted vest costs about $560.The death of Detective Dillon Stewart helped prompt the change. Stewart was shot and killed in the line of duty last November while attempting to pull over a car. He was wearing a vest, but the bullet slipped through a gap.The NYPD says it hopes to have the entire police force measured by the end of 2007.
