The new Baitul Aman Islamic Center in the Bronx celebrated its grand opening Tuesday just a day before the start of Ramadan.
The eight-story building on Newbold Avenue has been under construction for 14 years.
Imam Mohammad Azir Uddin says it’s a homecoming he has been waiting for since 2009, which was when the original mosque in the location was knocked down.
The community has been operating out of a different center while this one was built from the ground up.
As they approach their first Ramadan in the new mosque, the imam says they are expecting hundreds of people to gather each night.
Ramadan marks a time that Muslims strengthen their relationship with the Quran through fasting and prayer. At night, they break that fast surrounded by family and friends.
The imam says it’s a time for celebration.
“We're going to celebrate this month, our brothers, sisters, men, women. Everyone’s going to come...we will pray all night every night,” he says.
The imam is inviting all Muslims in the neighborhood to come to the new center to worship.
Ramadan in the U.S. begins March 22 at sundown and it set to end on April 20.
