Riders who travel between Brooklyn and Queens can now ride bikes without any hassle.

New six-foot bike lanes along the Greenpoint Avenue Bridge are now complete, with barriers helping to separate cyclists from cars and trucks.

The protected lanes span the entire length of the bridge.

The city's Department of Transportation says that talks about putting in bike lanes began in 2011.

"The key here is that this is a bridge, and bridges are more than pieces of infrastructure. They are there to make connections and we're very excited to better connect the borough of Brooklyn and the borough of Queens," says Ryan Russo, deputy commissioner of the New York City DOT. "We've seen tremendous growth and cycling and we had a bridge in essence [that] wasn't serving one segment of our community."
