A new bill endorsed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg would make it easier for school districts to fire teachers accused of inappropriate sexual conduct with students.
The legislation would give DOE Chancellor Dennis Walcott and school districts final say in cases involving teachers or school employees who engage in inappropriate sexual conduct with students. The current process involves the accused going through a hearing process before a fate is decided.
Parents welcome the new legislation but say they hope the city will do more to protect their children. The bill still has to be approved by the state Senate and Assembly and then signed into law by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
