325ds agoA local politician says he's very lucky and credits a local hospital for saving his life.
New Canaan First Selectman Kevin Moynihan suffered a minor stroke Easter Sunday.
"I went to plug my cellphone charger in to the wall and the room started spinning and then I collapsed onto the bed," said Moynihan.
Moynihan was rushed to Stamford Hospital.
"If you're unlucky and don't get to the hospital quickly your results can be entirely different," said Moynihan.
Moynihan met neuroradiologist Todd Miller from Stamford Hospital Wednesday at the New Canaan YMCA where the doctor is raising awareness about strokes.
"Blood is not flowing to the brain, that area of the brain will die," said Miller.
Doctors say the most common cause of a stroke is blood clots to the brain that can create symptoms like blurred vision and garbled speech.
If not treated, the effects could be debilitating.
Doctors say it's important to get treatment right away and that's what saved Moynihan.
"To be able to get him back out here to help people of the community is why we do what we do," said Miller.
Moynihan says he was in the hospital for only three days and went back to work.
Doctors say diet and exercise are two of the best ways to prevent a stroke, along with not smoking and weight loss.
