A new community center offering a place for Crown Heights residents to take part in fitness activities opened recently.
The Major R. Owens Health & Wellness Community Center is named in honor of Rep. Owens, who worked in the House of Representatives for more than 20 years. Owens served New York's 11th and 12th Congressional districts and was known for his passion to strengthen the education system.
The new 60,000 square-foot center includes a 25-meter, six lane competitive swimming pool, basketball courts, half a soccer field, a weight room and a wellness center. The center will also house several community nonprofits, and operators offering youth sports and programming.
Owens died eight years ago but his memory will live on through the center.
