More new police officers will flood the streets of Brooklyn's most crime-ridden neighborhoods under Operation Impact.
At Thursday's police academy graduation, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly urged the officers to take their jobs seriously.
"The class that preceded you had an important job with Operation Impact," Kelly said. "Now, the crime is down to the lowest it's ever been. Now, that torch is being handed to you."
About 300 graduates from the class of more than 900 will patrol the streets of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville, Crown Heights and East New York.
Officials point to reduced crime in Flatbush as proof that the program works.
While some residents are ready to see more cops on the beat, others have complained that the officers harass residents.
The officers get their assignments Friday. Kelly said all academy graduates will enter the program starting in 2008.
