A new chapter is unfolding for the northern tip of Central Park. The
Davis Center at the Harlem Meer has officially opened its doors.
Operated by the Central Park Conservancy, the $160 million facility replaces the former pool and rink. It aims to provide year-round access to recreation, nature and wellness programming.
Darline Lalanne, public programs director and general manager of the Davis Center, said the project is about connection – not just to nature, but to neighbors.
“Get away from the city, the hustle and bustle, just come and relax,” Lalanne said. “Everyone’s been coming here saying thank you, but the first thing I'd like to say is thank you to the people.”
The reimagined space includes the Gottesman Pool, the Ice Rink, the Kempner Boardwalk, a large public turf lawn, bird-safe glass windows and new views of the surrounding park previously blocked for decades.
“For people to feel more welcomed in the park,” Lalanne added. “Now you get a chance to experience Huddlestone Arch.”
A key focus for the facility is to offer low-cost fitness classes such as yoga to ensure community members can participate.
“When we say Central Park for all, it truly, really means that,” said Lalanne.
