As the battle continues to keep shipping jobs at the Red Hook container port, the operator of the port has announced a new deal that will bring more jobs to the area.
Officials from American Stevedoring, which operates the port, say the multi-year deal with Zim Integrated Shipping Services will add 152 jobs to Brooklyn and almost double the amount of cargo coming in.
However, American Stevedoring continues to fight the city to keep the piers open. The city and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey plan to close the Brooklyn port by next April and not renew the operator?s lease. City officials say freight can be better handled at ports in New Jersey. American Stevedoring officials argue the port provides jobs and reduces pollution by keeping trucks off the roads.
