Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani continues to shape his team, including who will carry out his affordability agenda when he takes office in January.
At a sanitation garage on Staten Island, Mamdani announced Leila Borzog as the new deputy mayor for Housing and Planning and Julie Su as deputy mayor for Economic Justice.
Borzog is currently the city's director of for housing under the Adam's administration and is described as being instrumental in negotiating the City of Yes for Housing Opportunity text amendment.
"This team will usher in a new era for our city, build one that puts working people first and confronts the crises of our time head-on. I am excited to roll up my sleeves to develop new strategies that will deliver on the mayor-elect’s bold housing agenda,” said incoming Deputy Mayor of Housing and Planning Leila Bozorg.
Su is stepping into an inaugural position as the deputy mayor for Economic Justice, bringing experience from her role as the former United States Secretary of Labor under the Biden administration.
The deputy mayor of Economic Justice will oversee consumers and working families, bringing together an umbrella of agencies to ensure rights are protected for workers.
"Laws are only as good as their enforcement otherwise they are words on paper, part of the job will be to breathe life into the protections that workers enjoy out of the respect of the City council that passed them but also to fulfill the vision of the Mayor-elect, in order to deliver real economic justice especially those who have been left behind in the past," said Julie Su, deputy mayor of Economic Justice.
The new administration will take office on Jan. 1.
