A new hit-and-run alert system took effect Saturday.
The system was named after Jean-Paul Guerreo, also known as DJ Jinx Paul. The 39-year-old radio personality died on Dec. 19, 2016 after being hit on Jamaica Avenue.
Under the new law, alerts will go out to the public within 24 hours of a hit-and-run accident involving a fatality or serious injury.
The alert will include information about the vehicle police are searching for.
Officials say New York City averages at least one hit-and-run per week.
