New improvement project to invest $146 million for Jewel Streets neighborhood in East New York

East New York residents are sounding off about a new plan to improve quality-of-life issues in the Jewel Streets neighborhood.
City leaders announced on Tuesday that they would invest more than $146 million in the area, which is known for unpaved roads and flooding because it sits below sea level.
The project includes a new drainage system to help alleviate flooding, improve sidewalks and streets to keep pedestrians and drivers safe, as well as create up to 5,000 new affordable homes.
Moses Edouard said he feels like he found a diamond in the rough by purchasing property in Jewel Streets.
“There’s a lot of excitement to Jewel Streets because this is Jewel Streets,” said Edouard. “There’s jewelry on every street here.”
Imran Alam, who owns a construction company in the area, said the upgrades are long overdue and looks forward to the transformation.
“That’s great,” said Alam. “Everything is going to be bling bling.”
Officials said they’re hoping to get the project underway next year.
“No plan is perfect, but I just hope that they execute it,” said Edouard. “I just hope that this is not words on paper.”
