Hundreds of fish were released into the Bronx River at the Bronx Zoo Thursday to help stimulate the area herring population.
For the past few years, the river had been a dumping ground for old tires and cars. But in February, zoo staff members spotted a beaver in the river, which wildlife experts say is a sign that life can be sustained in the waters. Congressman Jose Serrano (D) found the funding to have the river cleaned.
Bronx community groups and city officials gathered to release approximately 400 herring. This is just one of the many efforts underway to revitalize the Bronx River.
