The summer season may be coming to a close, but state and local leaders are marking a major milestone tonight when it comes to keeping kids safe at camp.

A new state law requires all camps to check if employees are on the federal sex offender registry. 

Before this law, certain camps - like those that focus on sports or theater - weren't required to do background checks. 

State Sen. Elijah Reichlin-Melnick, of Rockland County, and Assembly Member Amy Paulin, of Westchester, sponsored the legislation. 

They spoke about it Tuesday at Deerkill Camp in Wesley Hills in Rockland County.

"No matter what camp your child is going to, you should be able to have the confidence that they are getting screened, that camp employees are getting screened to make sure that they pose no risk of harm to your child," said Reichlin-Melnick.

"It ensures parents, that when they entrust their children, their most precious commodity, their most precious piece of themselves, to another place, that those children will be safe," said Paulin.

The law takes effect in 2023.
