A waterfall exhibit launched Thursday morning under the Brooklyn Bridge as a part of the New York City Waterfalls public art project.
The Brooklyn Bridge waterfall is one of four installations, created by the internationally acclaimed artist Olafur Eliasson.
?It?s very soothing and relaxing,? Eliasson says, ?and it shows the city has an eye for culture and art.?
Eliasson adds that he hopes his project will bring more visitors to the city?s waterfronts.
In a press conference dedicated to the launch of the exhibit, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg called the waterfalls an ?artful symbol of energy and vitality that we have been bringing to our waterfronts in all five boroughs.?
Besides the Brooklyn Bridge, water will also drop from under Manhattan Bridge and between Piers 4 and 5 by the promenade.
The four installations range from 90 to 100 feet in height, and they turn about 35,00 gallons of water a minute. They were built out of eco-friendly materials and designed to protect fish and aquatic life.
The waterfall project will run through October 13 every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and it is expected to bring in $55 million to the city?s economy.
