It feels like yesterday Barclays Center was packed with Liberty fans as they defeated the Minnesota Lynx in overtime of Game 5 of the WNBA Finals. Now, nearly a year later, the New York Liberty is parting ways with its fan-favorite head coach, Sandy Brondello.
Brondello quickly became a fan favorite in Brooklyn, leading the team to its first WNBA championship title in franchise history back in Oct. 2024. Just a year prior, Brondello and company lost to the Las Vegas Aces in the finals.
Despite four seasons of what fans called "stellar leadership" – Liberty announced it would not be renewing Brondello's contract through the 2026 season Tuesday.
General Manager Jonathan Kolb praised Brondello for bringing the team to new heights.
“We would like to thank Brondello for her everlasting impact on the New York Liberty," he said in a statement. "We wish Sandy the very best in her next chapter.”
Brondello's final season with the Liberty was cut short in the first round of playoffs this year, falling to the Phoenix Mercury in Game 3. She leaves the team with a 107–53 record.
