Protests in Cuba have sparked support from Cubans in the United States, and New Yorkers are hitting the New York City streets to show their support.
A local Cuban activist has organized a protest to get the word out on social media.
This comes as a response to the protests over the weekend on the island. Cubans have been taking to the streets of Havana and several other cities against the government.
The Cuban people say there is a lack of food and medicine, and prices for such things have gone up. The country is suffering from a serious economic crisis that has been made worse by the pandemic, but also by U.S. sanctions put in place by the previous administration.
Now, they are calling for freedom and for the president to step down. Some of the protests turned violent--authorities using tear gas and even arresting protesters.
The country also shut down access to social media. In the states, social media has seen the hashtag “SOS Cuba” grow as people show their support for the Cuban people and their protests.
