A Newark police officer who was shot in the line of duty has been released from the hospital.
Dozens of fellow officers lined up outside the exit of University Hospital Wednesday afternoon for a walkout ceremony for Officer Nicholas Edert.
Edert was promoted to detective upon his released. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Public Safety Director Brian O'Hara presented Edert with his new detective’s badge outside the hospital.
"He's an incredible, incredible young man. He's only 23. I thought he was actually older than that. But he's here. He's shot in the groin, and you know, he was just very positive,” O’Hara said. He was worried about his fellow officers. He wanted to see them, make sure they are OK."
Edert was shot on 14th Street during a struggle with an armed suspect Tuesday evening. Police officers were in the neighborhood responding to resident complaints. O'Hara said the area has been a location used for drug activity and violent crime.
