Newark police search for man who punched elderly man in broad daylight

Police are asking for the public's help identifying a man who attacked an elderly man in Newark Saturday.

Police are asking for the public's help identifying a man who attacked an elderly man in Newark Saturday.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. at the corner of Ferry and Merchant streets. Surveillance video shows a man in a dark-colored jacket, red hoodie, beige pants and red sneakers hop off a skateboard and approach the victim from behind.
He then punches the man, who falls to the ground and is knocked unconscious.

The video shows the suspect picking up something he dropped near the victim before he's chased away by an onlooker.
The man who was attacked was taken to University Hospital and is in stable condition. Newark's Department of Public Safety is asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 877-NWK-TIPS.
