For dozens of Brooklyn?s youths, Friday nights at MS 35 means time to practice dance, sports or even walking the runway.
1 City Youth Project, a nonprofit group that aims to get kids off the street, helps teens and young adults kick off their weekends every Friday and Saturday.
Doctor Leisa Williams started 1 City almost 20 years ago as an alternative to street life. ?I was involved in some not-so-good stuff, so I grabbed my friends and said, ?Lets make a club that would be just for us and anyone else that feels [like an outcast],?? Williams said.
Participants range from fifth- to 12th-graders. Some members say Williams is like a mother to them.
The organization has helped more than 3,100 young adults since its inception. Williams said she is constantly dreaming up new ways to get even more involved.
The organization?s program runs through the summer.
