Vivian McKenzie has declared victory in the race for Peekskill mayor.
This would make McKenzie the city's first African American woman mayor.
News 12 spoke with the Democrat earlier on Tuesday as she waited for the results to come in.
The current deputy mayor won the Democratic nomination during a primary over the summer, beating out grassroots organizer Conor Greene - who was on the ballot for mayor as the Working Families Party candidate.
Voters said they value McKenzie's experience in City Hall and that she is focused on job creation and affordable housing.
Current Mayor Andre Rainey did not seek a third term.
