The New York Aquarium marked 50 years in Coney Island by kicking off its season-long celebration Thursday.
Highlights included a ribbon cutting ceremony, stilt walkers, a vintage car show and a sea lion show. Dignitaries and the first two opening-day ticket holders were also on hand.
The aquarium is honoring its golden anniversary with 50 themed weekend events.
The attraction opened at W. 8th Street and Surf Avenue in June 1957. Since then, countless tourists and New Yorkers have enjoyed the aquarium's 10,000 creatures from all over the world.
