The WNBA team the New York Liberty are celebrating their 25th anniversary by giving back to the community.
The team partnered with City Harvest, a food rescue organization, to help pack bags to be delivered across the five boroughs.
The team, including former New York Liberty player legend Teresa Witherspoon, went to work and bagged up lunches.
Witherspoon says she understands all about food insecurity and believes she’s using her platform to make a real difference.
“This is a no-brainer because I believe in this it’s important for us to make sure that our stage is not only used to play the game of basketball but the stage is used to use your voice and be helpful to other people,” said Witherspoon.
This year, City Harvest has a goal to rescue and distribute 111 million pounds of food to charities, soup kitchens, and food pantries.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, City Harvest has helped secure 200,000,000 pounds of food for hungry New Yorkers. When donations leave the site, they’re going to the Campaign Against Hunger, an organization that helps combat food insecurity.
