State officials are hoping to ban people 16 years old and under from indoor tanning. Sen. Dean Skelos tells the Associated Press that a deal has been struck between the New York Senate and the Assembly's Democratic majority to pass the bill before June 21.
New York currently bars indoor tanning for children under 14, but allows people aged 14 to 17 to tan with parental permission.The American Cancer Society blames tanning booths for the increase in skin cancer among young people. It's a claim disputed by tanning booth operators, who say the artificial rays are safe if used properly.Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to sign the bill.
